Viewing the Sections of the CD

The CD is designed to automatically load this Getting Started page when the CD is insterted into the CD drive. This may not occur if the operating system or browser that you are using does not support this feature.

The Document Index page is your guide to navigating through the documents contained within the CD.

There are some helpful links at the top of each page:

Header Information

The header of the Document Index contains information for identifying the case. The header displays the claimant’s name and social security number, the claim types associated with the case, and the date and time the CD was created.

Color Coded Sections

The next part of the Document Index is where the bulk of the information you need will be shown. The index page is divided into color coded sections similar to a paper disability folder. Each section on the page corresponds to a section bearing the same title as an actual disability folder. The documents stored within are arranged just as they are in a paper folder. Each section displays the name of the document and some essential information.

The sections are:

  1. Payment Documents/Decisions (yellow)
  2. Jurisdictional Documents/Notices (red)
  3. Current Development/Temporary (green)
  4. Non-Disability Development (orange)
  5. Disability Related Development (blue)
  6. Medical Records(yellow)
  7. Queries (gray)
  8. Multimedia Files (gray)

Documents

The documents you have requested will be sorted under the color coded sections. You will see the document’s name and other information (receipt date, decision date, source, etc.).

Viewing Documents

When you click on the name of the document, except for Multimedia files (see Playing Multimedia Files for further instructions ), an image of the document should appear. The image you will see is exactly as the document is stored in the Social Security records. Once you have opened one document, you may return to the index page and open another one.

Test you computer's ability to view multi-page TIFF documents by clicking the link to a sample image below.

Sample Document

You should be able to see both pages of the two page sample document. If you can see both pages you should be able to view all the images on this CD. If you cannot view both pages of the sample image, you will have to correct this before continuing. Please check the following:

  • You have a multi-page TIFF viewer installed on your computer. See examples.
  • The file extension TIF is associated with your multi-page TIFF viewer.

Check "associating files" or "file extensions" in your operating system's help for more information on changing the program associated with TIF files.

Playing Multimedia Files

Downloading the audio player:
In order to play the audio files, you must have the For The Record (FTR) "The Record Player" audio player installed on your computer. If you do not have it, you may download it free of cost.

Please see hardware requirements to insure that you have the minimum system requirements for downloading "The Record Player".

Listening to Audio Files:
Once the audio player is installed you can open it manually. To do so:
  • Click on the Start menu and choose All Programs.
  • Choose For the Record(FTR) and then "The Record Player". At this point, the audio player should pop up on your screen. If the record player license agreement appears first, click the checkbox at the bottom left side of the screen that shows "Don't show this screen again.", and then, click the "I Agree" button.
  • Once the player is open, you will see an icon of a folder. Click on that folder to choose the audio files you wish to play.
  • Click on the icon (the arrow to display the drop down list of folders) to bring up a window where you can choose the files from the directories in which they are located.
  • Find the drive that contains the SSA Disability Folder. Choose the audio directory.
  • You will see the audio files located in that directory. Double click on the audio file that you wish to hear. The file should automatically load in the FTR "The Record Player".
